Clarification of Medical Questions: Over the Counter & Herbal Supplements
New "help text" provides additional guidance within eApp Life application.
In support of the application changes implemented 10/30, and taking into consideration feedback received from the Sales team, National Life will implement help text within eApp to provide guidance on the medication question within the Life application. The text will read as follows:
- Please note: Only include over the counter drugs, aspirin or herbal supplements if being taken for a chronic condition (i.e. Arthritis, Depression, Cardiac/Stroke Risk, etc.).
Our Underwriting team is really focused on the underlying condition which the client is using the medication for. If they are taking over the counter medication for something acute (short term) or benign (not harmful in effect) we do not need those items to be disclosed.
If they are truly being taken for acute or benign reasons, they will not have a material difference in the underwriter’s decision. If the client admits to taking supplements like St. John’s Wart, Ginseng, Chamomile, etc. this will not slow the underwriting process and the case could still go through the automated underwriting engine accordingly. As always, we strongly advise leveraging all dropdown features within eApp, minimizing spelling errors.
At this point in the application process, we ask Agents to rely on their skills as a field underwriter – asking the questions on the application and depending upon the client’s answer, requesting further details.

Questions on these changes can be supported through our Underwriting team.
As always, National Life thanks you for your partnership, as our Industry and Organization continues to evolve.
