Here for Good: It’s an Assurance That We Mean What We Say

Hear from Mehran Assadi on how National Life is here for the long haul.

We are Here for Good.

Those three words carry a big message.

They signal our longevity, our resiliency, our commitment to do good, and our deep belief in the strength of servant leadership.

At National Life we love the power of three. We love to keep things simple. Our three core values are Do Good, Be Good, Make Good. Those three values and six words pack a real punch and keep us focused on Due North. They’re so important to us that they’re inscribed in marble in our company’s lobby.

As this new year opens we have selected Here for Good as our clarion call for 2021.

It summarizes our history and our future; it captures our belief that ours is an honorable profession, and most importantly it trumpets our why.

We are Here for Good.

National Life was chartered in 1848: Our company has served the country through the Civil War, two world wars, the Great Depression, numerous recessions and the 1918 pandemic.

We have learned and grown from each of those challenges, strengthening our foundation in each of our 172 years so that we are strong enough and smart enough to face an uncertain future.

That muscle memory is what has helped us thrive in this pandemic, allowing us to continue to bring peace of mind to everyone we touch – even in the darkest days.

We are Here for Good.

At National Life we believe strong connections are the ties of strong communities. We also believe being a good corporate citizen is about more than writing checks. It’s about listening to the needs of our community and offering to help however we can.

As the 2020 pandemic ripped apart safety nets for too many, our charitable foundation focused its efforts on combatting hunger, through donations, the creation of community food cupboards and even stepping in to provide Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. Our company provides 40 hours of paid company time to volunteer for non-profits and even during the pandemic our teammates stepped up.

We are Here for Good.

I believe strongly that the best leaders are servant leaders. As Robert Greenleaf has written:

“The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first…”

As difficult as 2020 was for all of us, I look to this new year with optimism.

When you lead a 172-year-old company that has changed lives for millions of Americans optimism is easy.

Because we are Here for Good.
