Birmingham Police Officer Honored with Do Good Hero Award

A huge round of applause for this Alabama officer!

As a result of his outstanding service to the Birmingham community, Birmingham police officer Lane Harper has received national recognition. Harper was honored with the National Hero Award by our Do Good Heroes program. This award is presented to 50 individuals each year, and Harper was the only officer in Alabama to receive this honor!

The veteran officer founded the Power of Life Foundation to help people in need within the community. It helps provide food, housing, clothing, youth development, and disaster relief. The foundation initiated the “It’s Cool to be Covered” initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic to increase the use of face masks. Officer Harper expressed he’ll use the prize money to purchase backpacks for the organization’s upcoming backpack giveaway!

During the award ceremony at the Birmingham Police Academy, the room was full of people impacted by Harper’s work. His former college friend and current District Attorney for Jefferson County’s Birmingham Division Danny Carr reflected on their connection.

“I always say if you’re not impactful, your absence won’t make a difference, but man,” Carr said looking at Harper, “your presence is so impactful.”

Officer Harper says his desire to help others is based on a simple ethos.

“Treat people like you want to be treated, and also understand that everybody that you see, everybody that you run into is going through something,” Harper said. “So, if you can just lend a helping hand and let people know that you care, it’s always good to let people know that you care.”
